Citrus and Lavender

2022

70 x 106 x 10 inches (installation Dimensions vary)

paper pulp, citrus fruits, dried lavender, plastic mesh, cotton sacks and cotton twine

During the Covid-19 pandemic we were hyper aware of personal space and particles in the air. I started to learn how smell is innately an intimate sense that connects us with ourselves because of its relationship to memory. I chose to work with citrus and lavender because of a personal routine of cleaning with hand sanitizers with these two scents. I collected citrus fruits, peels as well as lavender, and embeded them in the purple hand cast paper fruit trays. Initially the scents in the installation have a calming effect, however with more time earthier notes of dried skins develope. Fruits in various stages of their cycles of decay remind us of the impermanence of flesh.
